This CD-ROM was my final project requirement for the completion of the four-year program at the Ecole Supérieure d'Art Visuel (ESAV) of Geneva. It was prepared under the supervision of Julie Ault, an artist from New York who teaches at ESAV. The project is about computer chess and how it relates to technology and reality. The idea originated with my interest in the highly mediatic chess match that took place in the spring of 1998 between Garry Kasparov, the world chess champion, and Deep Blue, the chess computer sponsored by IBM.

The subject of chess is in fact a continuation of my previous work on games, since two of my projects at ESAV were a video on people learning to play GO and the design of a playground for children. The decision to make a CD-ROM for this project, rather than simply write a text, was motivated by a number of reasons. I was interested in the influence of technology on today's society and decided to use the medium to illustrate the content. Also, since the process of learning is one of the themes I like to experiment with in my artistic work, I wanted to learn a software such as Director and use it for my project. I thought it would be relevant to present a subject dealing with computer technology throught chess animations, images, quotes, and texts, rather than to focus on texts alone.
