"SOMEWHERE IN THE TUNDRA...IN NO MAN'S LAND"
collaboration with Emanuel Geisser
Video installation in a coach, that travels regularly between Hamburg and Berlin
15th of July - 15th of August 1999

The bus is equipped with four monitors. On these one sees a video tape including various landscape sequences copied from all sorts of movies. These landscape sequences correspond to the kinds of landscapes the bus is travelling through on its way to Berlin, seen from the right-hand side of the bus. If the bus is passing, for instance, a field with a forest in the background, a similar landscape scene is showed on the monitors.
The view from the bus is represented through fiction, the landscape becomes universal, comparable to landscapes everywhere else.

In the opposite direction, Berlin-Hamburg, a simple recording of the same trip is showed, reproducing the landscape of the right-hand side of the bus. The time difference between the real and the reproduced landscape, the moment of recording as opposed to the moment of viewing the tape, as well as the displacement of time due to the traffic and other delays, all permit another kind of fiction to take form.
